Nothing, and I mean nothing is more ferocious and deadly than a fire inside a building.
Yes, we’re all familiar with the bonfire in November … it’s fun and something we all look forward to … but set that fire in a room and as the video graphically illustrates … it’s catastrophic.
With temperatures of hundreds of degrees nothing gets out alive.
“Volunteers are not paid because they are worthless, but because they are priceless”
I’m a volunteer with a local brigade. I also run a web development company so was recently tasked with a simple brief by the Chief: Build an application that would engage the community and allow us to get our messages out there.
There is so much we need to say … and hear!
Many questions … few answers!
Project Definition: To create a community portal that enables local fire brigades to communicate and interact.
Stage 1: After a period of R&D I realised that there were no effective platforms, which embed the local brigades into the communities they serve. Our hands are tied, our vioces muted.
With the launch of our new application http://FireBuddy.co.nz we’ve finally achieved Stage 1 of our goal. Our state-of-the-art system empowers us to connect directly with our village … and the nation.
http://FireBuddy.co.nz has been designed to make information available in an engaging, sometimes fun and never patronising environment and is backed by powerful, state-of-the-art software.
The website has been developed so that each brigade can manage their own area. The site is also populated with national and regional news creating a rich resource.
When a user registers at http://FireBuddy.co.nz they also receive a monthly newsletter, they are able to choose their area, building a valuable contact point and with social media pages now live the interaction grows.
To ensure the community remains engaged, http://FireBuddy.co.nz admin will post and send articles of concern and interest ensuring the website is continually updated with input from across the country.
Now with FireBuddy, if a brigade has something important to shout out, they simply send an email from our centralised system.
Our new voice is loud and direct and the communities are just that bit safer.
You can log in with the following information:
You’ll quickly grasp the set up and potential.
When a form is completed all the information is saved and the user can go back and update their settings until they get the required standard for Fire WOF certification. All results are emailed to the user and they can be shared on social media encouraging others to take the Fire WOF.
Geting the new generation long-life, photoelectric moke alarms into properties is our number one priority
The issue with the widespread 9v batteries is that they run out after several months of use and generally in the middle of the night!
People pull out the battery and forget to replace it, or use it for their TV remotes etc – we’ve all done it.
So even in those houses that do have alarms, there’s a huge percentage that don’t have working protection. Figures show that of the 3500 fires last year over 80% did not have working smoke alarms.
Smoke inhalation is the leading cause of deaths in those fires. People are often killed before they even wake up.
“Get a new generation, ten year, photoelectric alarm in every bedroom in every house”
PROPOSAL: The Fire WOF
The concept is super-simple!
The Fire WOF is a FREE voluntary initiative designed to be just like the car WOF.
Every 12 months homeowners update important details about their property.
Once a house is Fire WOF certified, property and loved ones are far better protected. Better still, it is going to present a minimised risk to insurers and we’re working to make Fire WOF certified homes eligible for discounts and special offers.
There are approx 1.5 million homes in NZ. The fire service cannot fund this goal and it is unable to accept national sponsorship.
As an independent entity the FireBuddy team has developed a proposition that by nurturing strategic partnerships, could achieve that goal and also answer the enduring question posed by them: “what’s in it for us?”
The 10 year alarms are around $30-$60 RRP so quite expensive for families, especially when you consider they need one in every room. Having done some research a direct cost would be more in the region of $10-$15/unit on volume.
There is an unprecedented opportunity for partners to subsidise the cost of a smoke alarms and to interact with homeowners on a national scale building a long-term, intimate relationship. By actively helping to protect homeowners and their families through this initiative offers an huge opportunity to secure brand loyalty for the FireBuddy partners.
There are multiple opportunities to develop the partners’ brands:
There are nationally:
FireBuddy is the main point of contact. The campaign will be managed through existing technology at FireBuddy.
POINT OF SALE REDEMPTION
Coupons can be redeemed at Partner outlets throughout the country. Currently, many of the largest retailers stock alarms in the furthest corners of the store. I propose a new point of sale stand to be placed at either the checkout or entrance playing the powerful 3 Minutes video commanding high profile exposure for the campaign.
The partners are there, the technology is there, the will and motivation is immeasurable. We now need the funding to back this, and investors to play an incredibly important role in the growth of FireBuddy and ultimately help us help the communities we serve.
Volunteer run brigades across the world face the same unique challenges as ours here in New Zealand. We are passionate about the service the new FireBuddy technology offers and we are acutely aware of the opportunities the application offers in bringing communities and first responders together … across the world.
Our strategy is to set up and iron out any issue through our local technology. Once the systems are fully tested we will introduce the international version.
Throughout Australia there are many volunteer firefighting agencies which are set up by the individual states or territories.
We have so much to say and give our time selflessly … and we need YOUR backing.
Thank You Backers
Backing for this project has been set and we sincerely hope this will be achieved for Firebuddy, however you can rest assured that further backing will be much appreciated and put towards helping the communities we serve locally, nationally and worldwide.
We have a number of long term projects for FireBuddy that not only help keep the communities safer but help us in the field.
This project is to develop the next stages of FireBuddy not only as a friend delivering essential information but as a vital repository for key information should the unthinkable happen. Even though data is protected by the highest levels of security we’re not asking for anything that could compromise privacy.
GOAL: $50,000 … What Will FireBuddy Do With The Money?
Thank You Backers 🙂
Although FireBuddy is a not for profit venture, we have identified opportunities to monetise the long term sustainability of the project. Every cent will be devoted entirely to developing and supporting FireBuddy and its technologies.
Backing for this project has been set at $50,000 and we sincerely hope this will be achieved for FireBuddy, however you can rest assured that any backing will be much appreciated and put towards helping the communities we serve locally and nationally.
FireBuddy is designed to be the glue that binds together scattered and diverse resources bringing together those who need help and those who want to give it.
Donations are needed to support the technology and staff to enable us to dedicate more resources to coordinating sponsored smoke alarm installation nationally.

We should all look forward to the time when we’re not talking about residential fire fatalities. Smoke alarms, CO detectors and residential sprinklers DO make a difference. I urge you to continue doing everything you can in your communities to spread the message of safety. We all need to do our part to make sure everyone goes home, including our residents.
